Custom-made spinal braces with a carbon-look finish and blue pattern – orthoses and braces in Thessaloniki

Orthoses are external devices that support, protect or correct a part of the body. In our workshop in Thessaloniki, Hlamidis Orthopaedic Center makes spinal braces and upper- and lower-limb orthoses for adults and children. Every orthosis is custom made: it is built to your own measurements, from a plaster cast or a 3D scan, in line with your treating physician's instructions.

What an orthosis does

Depending on the condition, an orthosis can:

  • control, limit or immobilise part of a limb or a joint,
  • support recovery after a fracture, once the plaster cast has been removed,
  • stabilise unstable joints and improve alignment when you walk,
  • make movement easier and reduce pain.

The orthoses and braces we make

Spine: scoliosis and kyphosis braces

Our scoliosis and kyphosis braces are custom made, based on the X-ray and the orthopaedic surgeon's instructions, and are adjusted as the child grows. For parents, we have written a detailed guide to scoliosis braces.

Upper and lower limbs

We make upper- and lower-limb orthoses and braces: foot and ankle-foot orthoses (AFO), knee-ankle-foot orthoses (KAFO), and knee, wrist and hand orthoses. Lower-limb orthoses often help people with muscle weakness or paralysis, for example after polio, or with muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis or a spinal cord injury.

Microprocessor-controlled orthosis

The Ottobock C-Brace is a microprocessor-controlled lower-limb orthosis that controls knee flexion in every phase of the step and lets you, for example, walk down stairs step over step.

Children and 3D printing

For children with cerebral palsy and similar conditions, we make thin, lightweight 3D-printed paediatric AFO/SMO orthoses. You can see all our solutions in the 3D printing section.

Face

Our carbon protective masks protect the nose and cheekbones after a fracture, so that athletes can return to their sport safely.

Materials and manufacture

We use materials such as carbon fibre, thermoplastics, lightweight duralumin alloy, leather and stainless steel, depending on the strength, weight and comfort each orthosis needs. The process starts with your doctor's prescription and an assessment, continues with measurements and a cast or scan, and ends with a trial fitting, the final fitting and any adjustments needed. We explain how to wear and look after your orthosis, and which shoes to choose so that you get the most out of it.

Insoles and orthopaedic footwear

Insoles are orthoses too: with our foot scanner we assess how you stand and walk, and make custom orthotic insoles to your measurements. You will find them, together with diabetic shoes and orthopaedic children's shoes, in our insoles and footwear section.

Orthoses, braces and EOPYY

As a contracted provider of EOPYY (ΕΟΠΥΥ), Greece's national health insurance organisation, we fill your doctor's prescription for people insured in Greece. The patient's co-payment is, as a rule, 25% of the reimbursement price. As an indication, under Government Gazette (ΦΕΚ) B' 1079/2022, the maximum reimbursable price is €595 for a Boston brace and €669 for a Chêneau brace, with replacement every 6 months up to the age of 16, and €232 for a thermoplastic in-shoe ankle-foot orthosis (AFO) made from a cast, every 2 years. Find out more on our EOPYY reimbursement page. The EOPYY information is correct as of the date this page was last updated (October 2026).

What is the difference between an orthosis and a brace?

In everyday language the two terms are often used interchangeably, and both are orthoses. In Greek usage, a “brace” usually means a device that supports or corrects the trunk or a joint, such as a scoliosis brace, while a “splint” or “orthosis” stabilises or immobilises a limb. Your doctor will specify exactly what you need.

Do I need a doctor's prescription for an orthosis?

For EOPYY to cover the cost, you need an electronic prescription from a doctor of the relevant specialty, with the diagnosis required for that specific item. Even without reimbursement, your orthosis is always made in line with your treating physician's instructions, so that it is right for your condition.

Does EOPYY cover orthoses and braces?

Yes, for people insured with EOPYY, for the items and diagnoses listed in its price list, up to the maximum reimbursable price and usually with a 25% co-payment. For children and teenagers many items are replaced more often, for example scoliosis braces every 6 months up to age 16. Contact us and we will check what applies in your case. If you are not insured in Greece, EOPYY reimbursement does not apply; you can pay privately, and any cover depends on your own insurer's rules.

How do you take measurements for an orthosis?

Depending on the type, we take a plaster cast of the limb or trunk, or carry out a 3D scan. From this we make the orthosis in our workshop, and you then try it on so that we can make the final adjustments for a correct fit and comfort.

Do you make orthoses for children?

Yes. We make paediatric foot orthoses (AFO/SMO), many of them 3D printed, scoliosis braces for teenagers, and cranial remoulding helmets for babies with plagiocephaly. The choice is always made together with the child's paediatrician or orthopaedic surgeon. See our 3D-printed children's orthoses.
