When the paediatric orthopaedic surgeon recommends orthopaedic shoes for your child, you want to be sure you will find the right pair, and one your child will be happy to wear. At Hlamidis Orthopaedic Center, Egnatia 101 in Thessaloniki, you will find children's orthopaedic shoes for conditions such as flat feet, as well as custom-made orthopaedic insoles.

Why childhood matters

Many orthopaedic conditions of the lower limbs appear in childhood or even from birth. During growth the body is still malleable, which is why early treatment, following the doctor's instructions, is so important. Just as a scoliosis brace needs to start early, orthopaedic footwear may be part of the treatment for lower-limb conditions.

Flat feet in children: what to know

In young children the arch of the foot often develops gradually, so a “flat” foot does not always mean treatment is needed. The assessment is made by the paediatric orthopaedic surgeon. If they decide your child needs orthopaedic shoes for flat feet or orthopaedic insoles, we will help you find the right solution.

When an orthopaedic shoe may be needed

Your doctor may recommend children's orthopaedic shoes in cases such as:

  • flat feet,
  • congenital foot deformities,
  • neurological conditions such as cerebral palsy, often combined with a brace,
  • a leg length discrepancy (one leg shorter than the other).

What we offer your child

  • Orthopaedic and comfort shoes: in designs children like, with laces or hook-and-loop straps.
  • Custom-made orthopaedic insoles: tailored to the particular needs of each young customer. See also the kids' version of 3D-printed 8Sole insoles.
  • Foot scan: for an even better assessment of the condition, using our digital foot scanner.

What to look for in a child's orthopaedic shoe

  • The right size: children's feet grow fast; check often that the shoe still fits comfortably.
  • A firm heel: the back of the shoe should hold the heel steady.
  • Room for an insole or brace: if your child wears an orthopaedic insole or a brace, the shoe must accommodate it without squeezing.
  • Easy fastening: hook-and-loop straps make things easier for younger children.

If your child wears an ankle-foot orthosis, see also our lightweight 3D-printed paediatric AFOs and SMOs, which fit more easily into a shoe.

Children's orthopaedic shoes and EOPYY

As a contracted provider of EOPYY (ΕΟΠΥΥ), Greece's national health insurance organisation, we dispense the doctor's referral for children insured in Greece, with a 25% co-payment (Government Gazette (ΦΕΚ) B' 2106/2025, Article 46). According to Government Gazette B' 1079/2022:

  • Orthopaedic shoes (low shoes or boots, with or without a raise for leg length difference): maximum reimbursable price from €51 to €250, depending on type and size, replaceable every 6 months up to age 16 and once a year after 16, for specific diagnoses.
  • Special insole made from a cast: maximum reimbursable price €90, replaceable every 6 months up to age 16.

These are maximum amounts, not guaranteed; the final reimbursement depends on the referral and on EOPYY's review. If you are not insured in Greece, EOPYY reimbursement does not apply; you can pay privately, and any cover depends on your own insurer's rules — contact us and we will give you the information you need for your case. Where can I buy children's orthopaedic shoes in Thessaloniki?

At our premises, Hlamidis Orthopaedic Center, Egnatia 101. As well as shoes, we carry out foot scans and make custom insoles. Bring your doctor's recommendation and the shoes your child currently wears. Call us on +30 2310 282 894 to book an appointment.

Does a child with flat feet need orthopaedic shoes?

Not every child with flat feet needs orthopaedic shoes. The decision is made by the paediatric orthopaedic surgeon after an examination. If they recommend shoes or insoles, we will help you find the right pair and, if needed, carry out a foot scan to see how your child walks.

Does EOPYY cover children's orthopaedic shoes?

Yes, for children insured in Greece, for specific diagnoses and with a doctor's referral. The maximum reimbursable price according to Government Gazette (ΦΕΚ) B' 1079/2022 ranges from €51 to €250, depending on type and size, with replacement every 6 months up to age 16 and a 25% co-payment.

How often should a child's orthopaedic shoes be replaced?

Children's feet grow quickly, so check the size often. EOPYY provides for orthopaedic shoes to be replaced every 6 months up to the age of 16. If the shoe becomes tight sooner, or your child complains that it hurts, come in and we will check it together.

What is the difference between comfort shoes and orthopaedic shoes?

Comfort (anatomical) shoes follow the shape of the foot for greater comfort. Orthopaedic shoes are recommended by a doctor for a specific condition and are often combined with an orthopaedic insole or brace. We will explain what suits your child, based on the doctor's recommendation.
